Apart from water, light is one of the most important factors in generating healthy and robust plant life. Enhancing your soil and ensuring your fertilizer is optimal aids in the production of your crops, while ensuring you have the proper lighting for your plant life is imperative.

Plants and Light

Plants absorb light through a process known as photosynthesis, and photosynthesis is performed in special cells called chloroplasts. Plants that are able to absorb higher light levels naturally have higher levels of chloroplasts.

A plant that enjoys lesser-lit conditions is capable of going through a process known as acclimatization. This is a process that suggests that traditional shade-loving plants can sometimes be “trained” to accept higher light environments over time. This process can allow you to grow multiple plants under the same conditions, without you having to alter your growing environment on a plant-to-plant basis if done gradually.

Light and Energy

A plant’s unique ability to convert light into energy is fundamental in its growth cycle. As such, indoor plant growth requires an appropriate and consistent light source.

Ultimately, understanding the optimal lighting conditions for any given plant will be reflected in the plant itself. Look for signs of too much sun – which include yellowing leaves, burned spots, or too little sun – which can cause a more leggy growth.


It should be noted that, “window sunlight” is not as strong as outdoor sunlight, and for those plants that prefer the shade, keeping these plants 2-3 feet away from any form of direct sunlight will reduce this undesired exposure by 50%.
